Pleasant Plains Historical Society

In an effort to re-connect to its historical roots, the Pleasant Plains Historical Society was created in 2009. Its stated purpose is “To acquire, restore and maintain historical sites surrounding the community.” With this aim in mind, in the spring of 2009, Mayor Jim Verkuilan publicly stated that Historical Society intends to purchase the Clayville Historic site. Clayville was a Lincoln-era stagecoach stop that was converted in a the Clayville Rural Life Center in the 1970s. It was operated by Sangamon State University until 1992. At that time, it was sold to a private individual who retains ownership. According to Mayor Verkuilan, the village would like to take ownership of the property in an attempt to revitalize the area and rebuild the tourism industry that was once linked to it. .[3]
